How To Nail The Effortless Bohemian Style

It’s funny how the same ways we look back from fashion trends of decades past and think they’re totally ridiculous (or awesome), our personal style goes through similar changes throughout the years, too. In recent years, I’ve felt my person style shift from colorful and tailored to super neutral and bohemian. I wear a felt hat as many days as I can get away with, I opt for oversized vs. fitted styled, and my hand somehow always reaches for the closest shade of grey/tan/cream a piece is available in.

If you’re like me, and you’re really digging the easy-breezy boho styles today, check out these easy wardrobe staples and tips to help you NAIL the look, bedhead hair and all.

1.) Get a staple hat. Mine just so happened to come in three colors, all of which I own. A hat is the perfect extra accessory, the most stylish item to hide behind (hello, hometown bars), and can make any bad hair day a good one. Although the hat is usually my last item I add to an outfit, it’s listed first because it might just be the most important.

Hat (J Crew Factory- not online but should come back in the fall) I love this one and also own this one| Sweater (Old Madewell) Similar | Skirt (Old Gap) Similar| Boots (Green is no longer available) | Watch (Color is old but other options available)

2.) Stick to neutrals (and naturals). The boho vibe is all about great, earthy neutrals. If the color can easily be found in a desert landscape, throw it on me. I stick to a pretty plain palette of browns, tans, creams, and navy (proud to say I’ve shifted from stark white and the blackest blacks (sometimes)). In addition to neutral colors, stick with natural materials! This JORD watch is easily my favorite natural item I own. The wooden chain and neutral stain goes with everything, and I never wear it without getting compliments.

3.) Layer, layer, layer. From sweaters and cardigans to bracelets and necklaces, layers = a good idea. I try to always have at least 5 pieces, but the more layers, the better. Try a sweater + with a cardigan or drapey scarf + black jeans or tights if you’re opting for a dress + ankle booties + and the always trusty hat.

4.) Have fun with it. I’m getting to a point where I sometimes start an outfit off with the “the more it doesn’t match, the better it goes together” mindset. Not saying this is always the best approach, but I really do love to experiment with pieces I wouldn’t necessarily pair together. Some of those experimental outfits have come to be my favorites.

5.) +1 accessory. Just when I think I’m done, I like to add just one more detail. Whether it’s a pretty ring, a scarf around my bag, or a pair of sunglasses folder over my top’s neckline, the extra accessory is always a good idea.

And Voila! What staples or tricks do you have to achieve an effortless and delicious boho style?
